Local Protesters Travel To Albany To Rally Against Hydrofracking

03/24/11

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Local people traveled to Albany Thursday to voice their opinions about hydrofracking in New York State.

The bus picked people up in Ithaca before making a stop for more protesters in Binghamton.

The protesters will rally outside of the New York State Capitol until 4:00 P.M. Thursday.

After that - they will then march to Governor Andrew Cuomo's office, hoping he will agree to expand the scope of the Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement to protect New York's environment.

"It may be what we need to do is take our energy dollars, and our subsidies, and direct them immediately to wind, and solar power and get away from carbon all together," says biologist and protester Sandra Steingraber.

The group recommends visiting the website www.toxicstargeting.com if you want more information about horizontal hydrofracking in New York State and how you can help prevent it.

Still ‘Fracking’: The Perils of Natural Gas Drilling

03/08/11

This week, we revisit a recent show about a natural gas drilling method called “hydraulic fracturing” or “fracking.”

While the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has increased calls to use natural gas as a so-called ‘clean energy’ alternative, activists are sounding the alarm bell about this controversial gas drilling technique.

We’ll hear excerpts from the academy award-nominated documentary, “Gasland.”

We’ll also hear from people from Pennsylvania to the mountains of Colorado who are trying to prevent the toxic fallout from ‘fracking’ before it starts.

Special thanks to Josh Fox, the producer of ‘Gasland,’ and to Alton Byrd and Rachel Zurer for helping to produce this show.

Featuring:

Walter Hang, Toxics Targeting President; Josh Fox, ‘Gasland’ movie producer; Weston Wilson, EPA employee not speaking on behalf of the EPA; Oil and gas industry executives; Pat Farnelli, Norma Fiorintino, Ron & Jean Carter, Dimock, PA residents; Dr. Theo Colborn, Endocrine Disruption Exchange President; Paul Light, Grand Valley Citizen’s Alliance President; Rachel Waldholz, High Country News Correspondent; Maurice Hinchey, New York State Representative, 22nd District; Wes Gillingham, Catskill Mountainkeeper Program Director.

Leaked EPA Documents Expose Decades-Old Effort To Hide Dangers of Natural Gas Extraction

03/04/11

Efforts by lawmakers and regulators to force the federal government to better police the natural gas drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" have been thwarted for the past 25 years, according to an expose in the New York Times. Studies by scientists at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on fracking have been repeatedly narrowed in scope by superiors and important findings have been removed under pressure from the industry. The news comes as the EPA is conducting a broad study of the risks of natural gas drilling with preliminary results scheduled to be delivered next year. Joining us is Walter Hang, president of Toxics Targeting, a firm that tracks environmental spills and releases across the country based in Ithaca, New York, where fracking is currently taking place.

EPA & Fracking Regulation
